Mitundu Road extension to improve livelihoods
Mitundu Road extension to Kambanizithe is expected to ease transportation of farm produce to better markets in Lilongwe City.
Speaking when he presided over the handover of the road project to Master Construction, Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining Bintonny Kutsaira, who represented Minister of Transport and Public Works Ralph Jooma, said the livelihood of farmers around Mitundu and Kambanizithe will improve.
“A good road means easy access to better markets and that will mean farmers making a lot of money from their produce and be able to support their families,” said Kutsaira.
Mitundu is a major food producer in Lilongwe but poor road network poses a major challenge for access to better markets, according to Traditional Authority (T/A) Chingala.
Kutsaira, who is also member of Parliament for Lilongwe Msinja North, said apart from access to better markets, the road will also improve access to hospitals and other social amenities such as schools.
Lilongwe district commissioner Lawford Palani said the road is one of the rural roads in the district lined up for upgrading under the Public Road Networks Improvement Programme.
The programme is a medium term strategy for wealth creation through sustainable economic growth and infrastructure development in line with the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy (MGDS).
The 15-kilometre road will cost K822.2 billion and is expected to be completed in nine months. The project will have eight kilometres from Mitundu Trading Centre upgraded from to bitumen and the next seven kilometres will be rehabilitated by reshaping and spot gravelling.
